BUTOH DANCE &
LIVE AMBIENT SYNTH MUSIC
A JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE
With Todd Grube
Butoh dance is a mysterious and spiritual Japanese dance having its roots in Zen Buddhism, Shintoism, Japanese kabuki theater and contemporary dance. The art form is known to "resist fixity" and it has a qigong look and feel.
Following World War II, Butoh arose in 1959 through collaborations between Japanese dance masters Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, who aimed to reassert Japans sense of self through art. Butoh has since spread its influence across the globe and is now performed and adored worldwide.
Butoh is sometimes called the dance of the soul and can be used as a form of moving meditation. Breath is used to move the body in slow motion and to awaken the body’s own internal energy (Ki). You can therefore expect simple breathing techniques which will allow you to calm the mind, followed by the guided movement of the body and its energies.
Butoh dance is slow and passive, without any choreographed steps or movements. Movements are expressing raw and untapped emotions since Butoh is all about feeling and expressing a specific mood like darkness, desire or transformation.
Heng -Ni will lead you through this journey of movement and meditation, being accompanied by CJ who will play live ambient synth music. The beauty of live music during the dance is that it encourages an open and inclusive moving meditation where everyone is involved and affecting one another.
This workshop is open for everyone curious about this contemporary Japanese form of art and its mindful expression. Previous dance experience isn’t necessary.
